James knocked on the door again. And again. The persistent thud-thud-thud made my temples throb.
"Who is it this time?" my partner groaned, glaring at the door.
Peeking through the peephole, I saw a man in a spotless white suit, clutching a leather briefcase. His smile screamed salesman. Insurance, probably.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
"Let’s just let him in and get it over with," I muttered, yanking the door open.
"Good afternoon!" James beamed, stepping inside uninvited. "I’m here to share an incredible opportunity—"
“Water would be wonderful!” James said, his enthusiasm unwavering.
In the kitchen, a sprinkle into his glass, a quick stir, and I returned to the living room. James gulped it down mid-pitch, and within minutes, his words slurred. He slumped over, fast asleep.
When James woke up, his white suit was pristine, but his arms and legs were bound to a chair with duct tape. His eyes widened in panic as we loomed over him, grinning.
"Now," I said, leaning in, "tell us again about those incredible opportunities."
